You Can Watch a Movie in Bed in Korea — We Tried It

Going to the movies in Korea doesn't always mean sitting in a regular theater seat with popcorn.

Some movie theaters offer a very different kind of experience.

Recently, we visited CINĒ de CHEF at Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul, where you can enjoy a restaurant meal and then watch a movie in a theater equipped with TEMPUR beds.

It's definitely not the way most people watch a movie in Korea, but if you're looking for something a little different during a trip to Seoul, it's an interesting experience to know about.

1. First, there's CINĒ de CHEF

CINĒ de CHEF combines a movie theater with a restaurant.

Instead of just grabbing popcorn before the movie, you can also have a proper meal at the CINĒ de CHEF restaurant.

The restaurant feels much more like a fine-dining restaurant than something you'd normally expect to find at a cinema.

The meal is served course by course, so it also makes the whole outing feel more like a special occasion than simply going to see a movie.

2. This isn't typical movie theater food

This is probably the biggest difference from a normal cinema.

You're not choosing between popcorn, nachos and a hot dog.

The food is plated and served like a restaurant meal, with several courses depending on the menu you choose.

You can have dinner before your movie and make the meal and the film part of the same evening.

For travelers, it's also an interesting example of how some Korean cinemas have turned movie-going into a more premium experience.

3. Then comes the unusual part: the theater

After dinner, we went into the TEMPUR CINEMA.

And this is where the experience becomes very different from a normal movie theater.

Instead of rows of standard cinema seats, the theater has large reclining TEMPUR beds.

You can take off your shoes, lie back under a blanket and watch the movie almost as if you were watching it from bed at home.

Except the screen is obviously much bigger.

4. Yes, you really watch the movie lying down

At first, it feels a little strange.

We're so used to sitting upright in a movie theater that lying down in front of a cinema screen feels almost too comfortable.

But once the movie starts, you quickly get used to it.

The beds give you plenty of space, and having a blanket makes the experience feel surprisingly private even though you're still inside a movie theater.

There's just one possible problem:

You might get too comfortable and fall asleep.

5. Is this how Koreans normally watch movies?

Definitely not.

Most movie theaters in Korea still have regular seats, and premium theaters like this are much more expensive than a standard movie ticket.

So this isn't something most Koreans do every time they go to the cinema.

It's better to think of it as a special experience — perhaps for a date, anniversary or just a different night out.

And that's exactly why it might also be interesting for someone visiting Korea.

Korea has plenty of things that tourists already know about — Korean BBQ, cafés, shopping and K-pop.

But sometimes it's these smaller, unexpected experiences that make a trip memorable.

Watching a movie from an actual bed after dinner is definitely one of them.
