Visiting Korea in Autumn: Weather, What to Wear and When to See Fall Colors

Autumn is one of the most comfortable seasons for traveling around Korea.

After the hot and humid summer, the weather gradually becomes cooler, walking around outside becomes much more comfortable, and the landscape begins to change from green to yellow, orange and red.

But if you are planning a trip, “autumn in Korea” can still be confusing.

Is September already autumn? Is late October cold? When do the leaves actually change? And is October or November better?

Here is what you should know before choosing your dates.

1. When is autumn in Korea?

For travelers, it is easiest to think of Korean autumn as roughly September through November.

But those three months can feel very different.

  • September: Early autumn, but daytime temperatures can still feel warm.
  • October: Generally cooler and comfortable for walking and outdoor sightseeing.
  • November: Much cooler, with cold mornings and evenings becoming more common.

Korea Tourism Organization describes spring and fall as generally clear and mild seasons. In Seoul, the average high and low are about 26.2°C / 17.7°C in September, 20.2°C / 10.6°C in October, and 11.9°C / 3.5°C in November. Busan and other southern cities tend to stay warmer.

So “I am visiting Korea in autumn” does not tell you enough by itself.

A September trip and a November trip can require very different clothes.

You can check Korea’s average monthly temperatures in the official VisitKorea climate guide.

2. Is September still hot in Korea?

Yes, it can be.

This is something that surprises some visitors.

September is generally considered early autumn in Korea, but especially in the first half of the month, daytime weather can still feel closer to the end of summer.

Trees may also remain mostly green.

So if you travel in September expecting red and yellow leaves everywhere, you may be too early.

For a September trip, light clothing is still useful, but it is a good idea to bring something you can put on in the evening.

3. What is October like in Korea?

For many travelers, October offers a very comfortable balance.

It is usually much less hot and humid than summer, while daytime temperatures are still comfortable enough for long walks, outdoor attractions and day trips.

That is one reason October is often mentioned when travelers ask for a good time to visit Korea.

However, the temperature can feel quite different between midday and early morning or evening.

Mountain areas can also feel noticeably cooler than city centers.

4. How cold is Korea in November?

November is when autumn begins to feel much colder, especially in Seoul and inland areas.

A sunny afternoon can still be pleasant, but mornings and evenings may be cold.

In Seoul, the long-term average November low is around 3.5°C, compared with around 10.6°C in October. Busan tends to remain considerably milder.

So if you are visiting in November, especially from a tropical or warm climate, do not pack as though it will simply be a slightly cooler version of October.

5. What should you wear in Korea in autumn?

The easiest answer is:

Wear layers.

Instead of bringing only very heavy winter clothes or only light summer clothes, bring items you can add or remove during the day.

For example:

  • T-shirts or long-sleeve tops
  • a light sweater or cardigan
  • a jacket
  • comfortable pants
  • comfortable walking shoes
  • a warmer outer layer if you are visiting in November

The exact clothing you need depends on the month, city and your own tolerance for cold.

Someone from a tropical country may feel cold at a temperature that a local person considers mild.

If you plan to visit mountains or spend a lot of time outside after sunset, bring an extra layer.

6. When do the autumn leaves change color in Korea?

There is no single date for all of Korea.

Leaves change earlier in colder mountain areas and later in some cities and southern regions.

Weather also changes the timing from year to year.

So a photo you saw online from “late October in Seoul” does not guarantee that the colors will look exactly the same on the same date the following year.

That uncertainty is why late October and early November are both common choices for travelers hoping to see fall colors around Seoul.

7. What is the 2026 fall foliage forecast?

For travelers visiting this year, Korea's 2026 foliage forecast gives us a useful guide.

According to VisitKorea, the first foliage is expected at:

  • Seoraksan Mountain: October 3
  • Bukhansan Mountain: October 23
  • Jirisan Mountain: October 28
  • Hallasan Mountain: October 31

Peak foliage is currently expected around:

  • Seoraksan Mountain: October 25
  • Bukhansan Mountain: November 4
  • Jirisan Mountain: November 5
  • Naejangsan Mountain: November 11
  • Hallasan Mountain: November 13

These are forecasts, not guaranteed dates. Actual foliage can change depending on weather conditions.

8. Can you see fall colors in Seoul without hiking?

Yes.

You do not need to climb a mountain to enjoy autumn foliage in Korea.

This is especially useful for travelers with children, seniors or anyone who simply does not want to spend a day hiking.

VisitKorea lists places such as:

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace
  • Seoul Forest
  • Olympic Park
  • N Seoul Tower

among popular autumn foliage locations in Seoul.

Outside the city, places such as Hwadam Botanic Garden, Nami Island and The Garden of Morning Calm are also popular.

9. Is October or November better for visiting Korea?

It depends on what matters most to you.

Choose October if you prefer:

  • milder temperatures
  • more comfortable outdoor walking
  • less risk of very cold mornings
  • a trip where foliage is not the only goal

Choose late October to early November if you prefer:

  • a better chance of seeing autumn colors in and around Seoul
  • red maples and yellow ginkgo trees
  • cooler weather

For 2026 specifically, the current forecast puts Bukhansan's peak around November 4, so late October through early November looks particularly relevant for Seoul-area foliage travelers this year.

But if you are visiting several regions, remember that foliage timing is not identical across the country.

10. Is Korea crowded in autumn?

Popular autumn locations can be busy, particularly on weekends and around peak foliage.

A famous mountain, garden or foliage destination can feel very different on a weekday compared with a Saturday afternoon.

If autumn colors are important to you, consider:

  • visiting popular locations on weekdays
  • arriving earlier in the day
  • avoiding building your entire trip around one famous foliage spot

You can enjoy autumn simply by walking through Korean neighborhoods, parks, palace grounds or riverside areas.

You do not necessarily need to travel to the most famous place on social media.

11. What else can you enjoy in Korea during autumn?

Autumn in Korea is not only about leaves.

It is also a good season for:

  • walking through historic neighborhoods
  • visiting palaces and traditional areas
  • parks and riverside walks
  • easy day trips
  • outdoor cafés
  • hiking
  • seasonal food
  • autumn festivals

Autumn scenery in Korea also includes silver grass and pink muhly, so fall travel does not have to be only about red and yellow leaves.

Autumn is also one of Korea’s busiest festival seasons. In my next guide, I’ll look at some of the best autumn festivals in Korea and which ones are actually worth adding to a travel itinerary.

12. My simple recommendation

If this is your first autumn trip to Korea, I would not choose your dates based only on one exact “peak foliage day.”

Weather and leaves change every year.

Instead, choose a period that fits the kind of trip you want.

For comfortable outdoor travel, October is a strong choice.

For a better chance of autumn colors around Seoul, late October to early November is often worth considering.

And most importantly, check the latest foliage forecast shortly before your trip rather than relying on photos from previous years.

Autumn in Korea is not beautiful only on the exact day the leaves reach their peak.

The cooler air, clear days and changing landscape make the entire season worth experiencing.
